In 2009 werd een recordaantal van 26 deelnemers gehaald, verdeeld over 4 divisies. Sinds 2005 kreeg het Brassband kampioenschap de titel wereldkampioenschap, toen ook bands uit Nieuw Zeeland en de Verenigde Staten acte de presence gaven. Naast de kwantiteit steeg ook de kwaliteit in de verschillende divisies, echter het aantal deelnemers in de kampioensdivisie bleef achter. Toch is het gelukt om dit kampioenschap op de kaart te zetten hetgeen ook bleek uit de grote belangstelling van de pers uit binnen- en buitenland. Het bestuur van het WMC heeft aangegeven om de status van het wereldkampioenschap verder uit te bouwen.

Een band die in 2009 haar 125 jarig jubileum vierde is de Cory band uit Wales. Op overtuigende manier wist deze band het WK 2009 te winnen. De band wist in 2009 bijna alles te winnen wat er te winnen valt inclusief het EK en WK. Indien deze band in 2013 haar titel gaat verdedigen dan is het zo goed als zeker dat vele Europese toppers hen naar de kroon willen steken. Dit zou betekenen dat Nederland met haar rijke cultuur op het gebied van blaasmuziek eens per 4 jaar het toneel zal worden van een prestigieus Wereldkampioenschap voor brassband.
